«خرگوش، فرار کن» کتابی است که جان آپدایک را به عنوان یکی از رمان‌نویسان اصلی آمریکایی در نسل خود یا هر نسل دیگر معرفی کرد. قهرمان آن هری «خرگوش» آنگستروم است، ستاره بسکتبال دوران دبیرستانی که با انگیزه همسر و پسرش را ترک می‌کند. او بیست و شش ساله است، کودکی گرفتار در کشمکش بین غریزه و فکر، خود و جامعه، ارضای جنسی و وظیفه خانوادگی - حتی به یک معنا، سنگدلی انسانی و فیض الهی. جویس کارول اوتس، رمان‌نویس آمریکایی نوشته است که آپدایک «یک استاد مثل فلوبر است، که ما را با صدای روایی‌اش مسحور می‌کند، حتی اگر ممکن است ما را با هوس‌های انسانی که چاقوی جراحی اش آشکار می‌کند، دفع کند». خود آپدایک می‌گوید «خرگوش، فرار کن» رمانی بود که بیشتر مردم او را با آن مرتبط می‌دانند، حتی اگر رمان‌های دیگر این مجموعه برنده جایزه پولیتزر شدند.

Rabbit, Run is the book that established John Updike as one of the major American novelists of his—or any other—generation. Its hero is Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom, a onetime high-school basketball star who on an impulse deserts his wife and son. He is twenty-six years old, a man-child caught in a struggle between instinct and thought, self and society, sexual gratification and family duty—even, in a sense, human hard-heartedness and divine Grace. American novelist Joyce Carol Oates has written that Updike is “a master, like Flaubert, of mesmerizing us with his narrative voice even as he might repel us with the vanities of human desire his scalpel exposes.” Updike himself said Rabbit, Run was the novel most people associate him with, even though other novels in the series won Pulitzer Prizes.
