Abdul Rahman Munif’s monumental novel quintet, named for the first novel in the sequence, Cities of Salt, has been described as the epic contemporary Arabic novel that helped to initiate a new Arabic literature. It was first published in Lebanon in 1984 and was immediately recognized as a major work of Arab literature. The novel describes the far-reaching effects of the discovery of huge reserves of oil under a once-idyllic oasis somewhere on the Arabian peninsula.
