Gerunds as the Subject

Gerunds are commonly used as the subject of the verb


جرندها به‌طور معمول به‌عنوان فاعل فعل استفاده می‌شوند. به مثال‌های زیر توجه کنید

Example

Singing has always been my passion/Crying is her greatest weakness.
(خواندن همیشه علاقه من بوده است.)/(گریه کردن بزرگ‌ترین ضعف اوست.)

Gerunds can also serve as the object of the verb


جرندها همچنین می‌توانند به‌عنوان مفعول فعل استفاده شوند. به مثال‌های زیر توجه کنید

Do you think she enjoys writing?/ Anna hates exercising.

Gerunds as Objects of Prepositions

Gerunds can also appear after prepositions and function as objects of prepositions


جرندها می‌توانند بعد از پیشوندها آمده و به‌عنوان مفعول پیشوند عمل کنند. به مثال‌های زیر توجه کنید

Example

I'm not afraid of jumping/She is really skilled at convincing my dad
(من از پریدن نمی‌ترسم.)/(او در قانع کردن پدرم واقعاً ماهر است.)

Spelling Rules

Sometimes the spellings of verbs undergo changes when forming gerunds


گاهی اوقات املاهای افعال هنگام ساختن جرندها تغییر می‌کند. در زیر به این تغییرات پرداخته‌ایم

If the verb ends in '-ie', change it to '-y' before adding '-ing':

اگر فعل به «-ie» ختم شود، قبل از افزودن «-ing»، آن را به «-y» تغییر دهید
Die → dying /Lie → lying

If the verb ends in '-e', remove it and then add the '-ing'

اگر فعل به «-e» ختم شود، آن را حذف کرده و سپس «-ing» را اضافه کنید
Strike → striking /Take → taking

Gerunds Vs. Present Participles

Although gerunds and present Participles look the same, they have different functions. Present Participles are used as verbs or adjectives while gerunds function as nouns


اگرچه جراندها و صفت‌های حال استمراری از نظر ظاهری مشابه هستند، عملکردهای متفاوتی دارند. صفت‌های حال استمراری به عنوان فعل یا صفت استفاده می‌شوند، در حالی که جراندها به عنوان اسم عمل می‌کنند. مثال‌های زیر را مقایسه کنید

Here, the highlighted phrase is a gerund because it is functioning as a noun

در اینجا، عبارت هایلایت شده جراند است زیرا به عنوان اسم عمل می‌کند
Going on a trip to the country is one of my favorite hobbies
(سفر به روستا یکی از سرگرمی‌های مورد علاقه من است.)

As you can see, the highlighted word is a present participle and is functioning as a verb

I'm eating lunch
